'Saint' class details, 2971 - 2998

2971  Albion. The third prototype of what was to become the Saint class. Built with half-cone boiler and unnamed December 1903 and numbered 171. First shed Paddington. Named Albion February 1904. Converted to 4-4-2 October 1904 prior to trials against La France. Renamed The Pirate March 1907. Reverted back to 4-6-0 in July 1907 and renamed Albion. Full-cone boiler fitted September 1909, but reverted to half-cone boiler with superheater October 1910. Full-cone boiler fitted August 1914. Renumbered 2971 in 1913. Last shed Swindon. Withdrawn January 1946.

2972  The Abbot. Built with half-cone boiler, February 1905 as 4-4-2 number 172 Quicksilver. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Renamed The Abbot in March 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler August 1908. Superheater fitted March 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 April 1912. Last shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Withdrawn March 1935.

2973  Robins Bolitho. Built with half-cone boiler, March 1905 as 4-6-0 number 173 Robins Bolitho. First shed allocation Paddington. Full-cone boiler fitted October 1909, but reverted to half-cone boiler with superheater October 1910. Fitted with full-cone boiler October 1914. Last shed allocation Chester. Withdrawn July 1933.

2974  Lord Barrymore. Built with half-cone boiler, March 1905 as 4-6-0 number 174 Barrymore . First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Renamed Lord Barrymore in May 1905. Fitted with full-cone boiler May 1909. Superheater fitted October 1910. Last shed allocation Pontypool. Withdrawn August 1933.

2975  Lord Palmer. Built with half-cone boiler, March 1905 as unnamed 4-6-0 number 175. First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Named Viscount Churchill 1907. Superheater fitted November 1911. Fitted with full-cone boiler January 1913. Renamed Sir Ernest Palmer, February 1924. Renamed Lord Palmer in October 1933. Involved in the incident with 4088 Dartmouth Castle at Appleford Crossing 13 November 1942 when driven off the end of the down goods loop. Last shed allocation Banbury. Withdrawn November 1944.

2976  Winterstoke. Built with half-cone boiler, April 1905 as unnamed 4-6-0 number 176. First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Named in April 1907. Superheater fitted March 1911. Fitted with full-cone boiler June 1912. Last shed allocation Wolverhampton. Withdrawn January 1934.

2977  Robertson. Built with half-cone boiler, April 1905 as unnamed 4-6-0 number 177. First shed allocation Paddington. Named in April 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler June 1909, but reverted to half-cone boiler with superheater May 1911. Fitted with full-cone boiler August 1914. Last shed allocation Westbury. Withdrawn February 1935.

2978  Charles J. Hambro. Built with half-cone boiler, April 1905 as 4-6-0 number 178 Kirkland . First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Fitted with full-cone boiler November 1908. Superheater fitted April 1911. Renamed Charles J. Hambro in May 1935. Last shed allocation Swindon. Withdrawn August 1946.

2979  Quentin Durward. Built with half-cone boiler, April 1905 as 4-4-2 number 179 Magnet. First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Renamed Quentin Durward in March 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater June 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 August 1912. Outside steam pipes fitted March 1936. August 1950 shed allocation Newport Ebbw Junction. Last shed allocation Swindon. Withdrawn January 1951.

2980  Coeur de Lion. Built with half-cone boiler, May 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 180. First shed allocation Paddington. Named in March 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater November 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 January 1913. Last shed allocation Newport. Withdrawn May 1948.

2981  Ivanhoe. Built with half-cone boiler, June 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 181. First shed allocation Newton Abbot. Named in 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater October 1910. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 July 1912. August 1950 and last shed allocation Banbury. Withdrawn March 1951.

2982  Lalla Rookh. Built with half-cone boiler, June 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 182. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Named in 1906. Fitted with full-cone boiler September 1907, but reverted to half-cone boiler August 1908. Fitted with full-cone boiler September 1909, reverted back to half-cone boiler with superheater November 1912 when rebuilt as 4-6-0. Fitted with half-cone boiler June 1914, but reverted back to half-cone boiler October 1916. Fitted yet again with full-cone boiler June 1920. Last shed allocation Newport. Withdrawn June 1946.

2983  Redgauntlet. Built with half-cone boiler, July 1905 as 4-4-2 number 183 Red Gauntlet. First shed allocation Paddington. Fitted with full-cone boiler December 1909 and superheater fitted October 1910. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 April 1912. Name altered to Redgauntlet June 1915. Last shed allocation Tyseley. Withdrawn March 1946.

2984  Guy Mannering. Built with half-cone boiler, July 1905 as 4-4-2 number 184 Churchill. First shed allocation Paddington. Renamed Viscount Churchill in 1906, but renamed again to Guy Mannering in 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler November 1908, but reverted to half-cone boiler January 1910. Fitted with full-cone boiler November 1910, reverted back to half-cone boiler with superheater June 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 August 1912. Full-cone boiler fitted October 1915. Last shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Withdrawn May 1933.

2985  Peveril of the Peak. Built with half-cone boiler, July 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 185. First shed allocation Paddington. Named as Winterstoke in February 1906. Renamed Peveril of the Peak in April 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler May 1907, but reverted to half-cone boiler June 1908. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater April 1910. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 May 1912. Fitted with half-cone boiler November 1918, reverted back to full-cone boiler June 1920. Last shed allocation Swansea. Withdrawn August 1931.

2986  Robin Hood. Built with half-cone boiler, July 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 186. First shed allocation Paddington. Named in April 1906. Fitted with full-cone boiler August 1909, but reverted to half-cone boiler April 1910. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater February 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 May 1912. Half-cone boiler fitted March 1915, but reverted back to full-cone boiler December 1916. Last shed allocation Swindon. Withdrawn November 1932.

2987  Bride of Lammermoor. Built with half-cone boiler, August 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 187. First shed allocation Exeter. Named as Robertson in November 1905. Renamed Bride of Lammermoor April 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler August 1908, but reverted to half-cone boiler August 1909. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater April 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 June 1912. Outside steam pipes fitted March 1942. Last shed allocation Hereford. Withdrawn October 1949.

2988  Rob Roy. Built with half-cone boiler, August 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 188. First shed allocation Newton Abbot. Named in 1907. Superheater fitted August 1910. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 May 1912. Fitted with full-cone boiler May 1914. Last shed allocation Tyseley. Withdrawn May 1948.

2989  Talisman. Built with half-cone boiler, September 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 189. First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. Named in 1906. Fitted with full-cone boiler May 1908, but reverted to half-cone boiler with superheater July 1911. Fitted with full-cone boiler April 1912. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 October 1912. Last shed allocation Chester. Withdrawn September 1948.

2990  Waverley. Built with half-cone boiler, September 1905 as unnamed 4-4-2 number 190. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Named in 1906. Fitted with full-cone boiler with superheater March 1911. Rebuilt as 4-6-0 November 1912. Last shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Withdrawn January 1939.

2998  Ernest Cunard. Second prototype of what was to become the Saint class. Built with half-cone boiler unnamed March 1903 and numbered 98. First shed allocation Paddington. Named Persimmon in 1906. Renamed Vanguard in March 1907. Renamed again Ernest Cunard in December 1907. Fitted with full-cone boiler November 1908. Superheated September 1911. Fitted with half-cone boiler January 1913. Renumbered 2998 in 1913. Full-cone boiler fitted January 1917. Last shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Withdrawn June 1933.

Please note that table shows changes in boiler type only.
For example, 4003 Lode Star was withdrawn in 1951 with its seventeenth boiler,
but as all were of the full-cone type, no boiler changes are shown.
