'Western' class details, D1000 - D1036
D1000 Western Enterprise. Built at Swindon, December 1961. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Old Oak Common. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn February 1974 after 1,240,000 miles service, due to 'A' end collision damage.
D1001 Western Pathfinder. Built at Swindon, February 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Transferred to Old Oak Common, October 1962 before returning to Plymouth Laira, March 1964. Transferred to Swansea Landore, January 1968 but again returned to Plymouth Laira, February 1970. Withdrawn October 1976 after 1,264,000 miles service, due to 'B' end damage after a collision with a BR van.
D1002 Western Explorer. Built at Swindon, March 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Bristol Bath Road. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn January 1974 after 1,144,000 miles service, due to 'B' end collision damage.
D1003 Western Pioneer. Built at Swindon, April 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn January 1975 after 1,248,000 miles service, due to a lack of engines.
D1004 Western Crusader. Built at Swindon, May 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn August 1973 after 1,088,000 miles service.
D1005 Western Venturer. Built at Swindon, June 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Transferred to Old Oak Common, October 1962 before returning to Plymouth Laira, March 1964. Transferred to Swansea Landore, January 1968 until returning back to Plymouth Laira, March 1969. Withdrawn November 1976 after a record 1,392,000 miles, the highest recorded milage for a 'Western' in BR service. Withdrawal was due to the 'A' end dynostart and cables burnt in a fire.
D1006 Western Stalwart. Built at Swindon, July 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn April 1975 after 1,208,000 miles service, due to a lack of engines.
D1007 Western Talisman. Built at Swindon, August 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Involved in the fatal accident at West Ealing in December 1973 due to an open battery box door and subsequently withdrawn in January 1974 after 1,160,000 miles service.
D1008 Western Harrier. Built at Swindon, September 1962. First shed allocation Plymouth Laira. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn October 1974 after 1,136,000 miles service, due to a lack of engines.
D1009 Western Invader. Built at Swindon, September 1962. First shed allocation Old Oak Common before moving to Plymouth Laira, February 1964. Transferred to Swansea Landore, January 1968 before returning to Plymouth Laira, December 1968. Transferred again to Swansea Landore, March 1970 before returning back to Plymouth Laira, October 1971. Withdrawn November 1976 after 1,376,000 miles service. Offered for tender in full working order but as no acceptable tenders were received, engines were sold to Dutch scrap dealer in May 1977.
D1010 Western Campaigner. Built at Swindon, October 1962 as the first 'Western' in maroon livery with half yellow warning panels. First shed allocation Old Oak Common. Moved to Plymouth Laira, January 1964. Hauled the Ian Allan special from Paddington to Penzance in May 1966, breaking three speed records in one day. Transferred to Swansea Landore, January 1968. Returned to Plymouth Laira, November 1968. In May 1974, hauled the Wirrel Railway Circle's "Great Briton Ltd" tour of 15 coaches from Paddington to Penzance in 5 hrs 39 mins. Other tours included the BR "Tour 52" of 1976 followed by the "Western Reqiem Relief" and "Western Reqiem" in 1977. It was on this final tour that 'Western Campaigner' developed an engine fault soon after leaving Paddington but galliantly soldiered on to Cardiff. Withdrawn 28 February 1977 after 1,360,000 miles service, one of 4 'Western' locomotives withdrawn on the last day of Western Region diesel - hydraulic service. Bought by Foster - Yeoman and moved to Merehead quarry in July 1977. Renamed and numbered D1035 'Western Yeoman'. After a severe winter out of use, serious damage to the intercooler system and heat exchangers meant the locomotive was kept in the sidings at Merehead until May 1986 when it was moved to Didcot Railway Centre for restoration.
D1011 Western Thunderer. Built at Swindon, October 1962. First shed allocation Old Oak Common. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn October 1975 after 1,248,000 miles service.
D1012 Western Firebrand. Built at Swindon, November 1962. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn November 1975 after 1,296,000 miles service.
D1013 Western Ranger. Built at Swindon, December 1962. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Transferred to Old Oak Common, March 1963 before returning to Cardiff Canton, April 1963. Transferred to Swansea Landore, February 1965 before returning back to Cardiff Canton, February 1966. Moved to Plymouth Laira, April 1966 but transferred to Swansea Landore, April 1968 but returned again to Plymouth Laira, October 1971. Pulled the 'Western Tribute' tour with D1023 Western Fusilier on the 26 February 1977 and withdrawn 28 February 1977 after 1,320,000 miles service, one of 4 'Western' locomotives withdrawn on the last day of Western Region diesel - hydraulic service. Bought in May 1977 by Richard Holdsworth, a private individual with interests in the Western Locomotive Association. Moved to the Torbay Steam Railway but owing a lack of space and servicing requirements, transferred to the Severn Valley Railway
D1014 Western Leviathan. Built at Swindon, December 1962. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn August 1974 after 1,128,000 miles service, due to a lack of engines and bogies.
D1015 Western Champion. Built at Swindon, January 1963 with "Golden Ochre" livery with yellow warning panels. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Transferred to Old Oak Common, March 1963 before returning to Cardiff Canton, June 1963. Transferred again to Old Oak Common, September 1963, before moving to Plymouth Laira, February 1964. Transferred to Swansea Landore, November 1968 before returning to Plymouth Laira, October 1971. Withdrawn December 1976 after 1,296,000 miles service, due to derailment damage which included a ruptured fuel tank. Kept in sidings at Swindon Works until bought by the Diesel Traction Group. Restored at Swindon and returned to use in 1986. Attended the Old Oak Common open day but prior to travelling to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Western Champion was failed due to a cracked axle.
D1016 Western Gladiator. Built at Swindon, February 1963. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. June 1964 shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn December 1975 after 1,248,000 miles service, due to an 'A' end dynostart fire.

D1022 Western Sentinel. Built at Swindon, July 1963. First shed allocation Old Oak Common but moved to Cardiff Canton, September 1963. Transferred to Swansea Landore, February 1965 before returning to Cardiff Canton, March 1966. Moved to Plymouth Laira, April 1966. Withdrawn from Old Oak Common shed in January 1977 after 1,312,000 miles service, due to derailment damage to the brake gear.
D1023 Western Fusilier. Built at Swindon, September 1963. First shed allocation Cardiff Canton. Moved to Swansea Landore, February 1965 before returning to Cardiff Canton, March 1966. Transferred to Plymouth Laira, April 1966. Last 'Western' to return after a major overhaul in September 1973. Involved in 80 yard derailment in January 1975 due to complete failure of the leading axle. In November 1976, worked the "Western Talisman" tour from King's Cross to York, where crowd numbers exceeded that of the visiting LNER Flying Scotsman. Pulled the 630 mile round journey from Paddington to South Wales, Plymouth and return "Western Tribute" tour with D1013 Western Ranger on the 26 February 1977 and withdrawn 28 February 1977 after 1,256,000 miles service, one of 4 'Western' locomotives withdrawn on the last day of Western Region diesel - hydraulic service. Selected for exhibition at the National Railway Museum, York, before working on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway in 1981.

D1031 Western Rifleman. Built at Crewe, December 1963. First shed allocation Old Oak Common. June 1964 shed allocation Newton Abbot. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn February 1975 after 1,096,000 miles service, due to a lack of engines.
D1032 Western Marksman. Built at Crewe, December 1963. First shed allocation Old Oak Common. June 1964 shed allocation Newton Abbot. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn May 1973 after the lowest 'Western' mileage on withdrawal of 944,000 miles service. Withdrawal was due to an axle flaw.
D1033 Western Trooper. Built at Crewe, January 1964. First shed allocation Old Oak Common before moving to Newton Abbot, March 1964. Transferred to Plymouth Laira, June 1965. Withdrawn September 1976 after 1,272,000 miles service due to worn tyre on 'B' end bogie. Used as train heating unit at Laira depot until February 1977.
D1034 Western Dragoon. Built at Crewe, April 1964. First shed allocation Bristol, Bath Road. June 1964 shed allocation Old Oak Common. Last shed allocation Plymouth Laira. Withdrawn October 1975 after 1,144,000 miles service, due to a frame fracture of the main tube.
